Highway Chile
The Dolphin has officially made it out of Seattle on to the open road…After packing up the camper with the bikes, camping gear and a whole lot of other miscellaneous things; I took off on Highway 101 via I-5 around 11:30pm Thursday evening. Drove for about 5 hours on the road (max speed: 55 mph), and made it to Wilapa State Park. Pulled off and slept for a bit; resumed driving at 8:30am. Starting the day with a little coffee recharge in Seaside, the drive went smoothly through to the coast. The day started with a little rain, but burned off by 10, and for the rest of the day it was the nicest weather I have ever seen on the coast.
During the course of the trip, I learned a couple quirky things about the camper: 1) There is a small vent which shoots extremely hot air onto your gas pedal foot, 2) fuses periodically blow for no reason, resulting in getting stopped by cops for having no tail lights, and 3) the heater is apparently always on.
…now in San Francisco, enjoying a cup of coffee with my Mom. Tomorrow is another long day of driving, en route to southern California, where the camper will wait until Robin and I return in a month to go on more adventures in it. Stay tuned for more adventures…

Erik visits Robin in NOLA
Erik and Robin get Saturday off. Erik drives 2.5 hours west from Mobile, AL, to New Orleans, LA to hang with Robin. Robin and Erik head south on LA Hwy 23 to see Venice, LA in Plaquemine's Parish. Erik and Robin drive back up north at the end of the day, Erik drops Robin off in New Orleans, and Erik heads back to Mobile, AL, that night for work the next day.

Graduation!
Greetings from Seattle…
So, the tally grows: one graduation, two more degrees, 4 family members visited and lots of food eaten! The past two weeks have been very busy, and eventful. In between packing up Robin’s stuff, moving my furniture to her place, moving my gear to storage and moving out my tenants, I managed to complete my final construction management project and presentation, write a law paper, take two finals and make the Dean’s list again!
On Friday, June 11, 2010, I graduated from the University of Washington with a BA in Architecture and a BS in Construction Management. I participated in the College graduation ceremony the next day and said by goodbyes to some of my friends. The past years at the UW, are times which I will never forget; however, as fun as it is to be in school, I am excited to enter in to a new time in my life, post-school, where I can return to some of the things I love to do that got pushed aside while in school.
My parents were up in Seattle to visit for the graduation and my 27th birthday as well; and true to Seattle form, as soon as they arrived, the sun came out and it was the nicest day of the year! “What do you mean it rains a lot here!?” No, really, it does…

Robin's check-in from NOLA
New Orleans, Louisiana.
Hello there, friends--
I'm checking in from New Orleans, LA! For those I didn't talk to before leaving, the Coast Guard called me up on May 26th to head down for Deepwater response efforts here in NOLA and surrounding areas. I'm currently just a few miles from downtown New Orleans still going through the intake process, awaiting assignment either in the field or at one of the area command posts. Reserves and active duty members from all over the country have reported here, and more come every day. Teams of pollution investigators, boom placement crews, and emergency response teams are set up all over from Louisiana to Florida. My brother Erik is also down here and called today while on a boat laying boom in Mobile; it's very cool to have him here. I asked around about positions near him for myself, but I think I'm already slated to stay here in Louisiana.
My orders are for 60 days so I anticipate being here through August 1. It will be an adventure and a learning experience for sure. I have not heard talk of a switch to Title 10 orders for us (much longer time period) and that instead they are "committed to demobilization after 60 days." I imagine, however, that the request for Coast Guard presence will continue here for some time.
I got some time last night to walk around Bourbon Street and take some photos. The local festivities are best taken in when the senses are ready! If you just sift through things a bit, you can find a goldmine of great local music, dancing, art, food, architecture, colors, and southern personality. I was lucky to find a group of local musicians camped on a side street playing Zydeco, locals were dancing everywhere, great tunes.
